Global Explorations
Each year, Solebury School offers exciting experiences abroad to help students explore new cultures, expand their worldviews, practice another language, and create lifelong memories. The following opportunities are available for the 2024-2025 school year and enable students to complete the travel requirement for our Global Education Concentration.
French Immersion in Aix-en-Provence
Tentative dates: June 14-22, 2025
During this this unique two week travel experience, students will gain invaluable insight into French language and culture. While staying in a homestay with a family, students will spend their weekdays taking language classes in the morning and enjoying unique cultural experiences in the afternoon such as learning how to make a baguette, play petanque, and the connection between local landscapes and artists such as Paul Cézane. The weekend of their stay will be spent in Marseille celebrating la Fête de la Musique, visiting local sites such as the Basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde, and taking a boat tour of les Calanques.
Spanish Immersion in Sevilla
Tentative dates: June 2026
Spanish students will spend two weeks in the city of Sevilla exploring local Spanish culture and strengthening their language skills while staying with a host family. They will spend their weekdays taking language classes in the morning and, after a siesta, exploring Sevilla with activities such as kayaking, learning how to Flamenco, and make a paella. Their weekend in Spain will include a trip to Granada where they will explore local sites and visit the Alhambra palace.
Exchange in St-Légier, Switzerland
Solebury School students can participate in a three-week long exchange with students from the French/English Haut-Lac International Bilingual School in St-Légier, Switzerland. The school is situated between Montreaux and Lausanne in the gorgeous Lake Geneva region. Solebury students normally travel to Switzerland in March during Spring Break. Exchange students have been hosted by Solebury families either in the fall or spring trimester. While in Switzerland, Solebury students stay with host families, attend classes with their exchange students, and explore the surrounding area. The exchange is intended for 9th and 10th grade students who are in, or have taken, French classes. Preference will be given to these students; however, if you do not take French, you are welcome to apply.
There is no additional tuition cost for this program, just the cost of the flight to Switzerland.
Previous Explorations
My weekend excursions, along with my own time spent wandering the city, walking down narrow streets and going to museums were the most 'cultural' and engaging times I had in Barcelona. As often as I could, I would take the L3 metro to Plaça Catalunya or Liceu, and from there explore the old city. El Raval and La Ribera are two neighborhoods that I came to know and love, both in the original Barcelona. Many buildings are old and hold historical context, yet the streets are not throbbing with tourists. El Raval has large Arab and Asian populations, and therefore it is a center for many types of ethnic food. It is quite beautiful, with extremely narrow streets with a constant stream of people, bikes, and motorcycles.
